What Does Sedation Dentistry Feel Like?

October 31, 2021 12:14 pm

Dental sedation is great for anxious patients, patients that can’t sit still for long, or more complex procedures. When administered by our specially-trained team, dental sedation is safe for both adults and kids!

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a sedative that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a nose mask. As you breathe in, you’ll quickly feel relaxed and anxiety-free. However, you don’t actually “go under” with this sedation. You’ll feel alert your entire treatment and be able to respond to us. Once we remove your mask, you’ll quickly feel normal. If you drove yourself, you’re able to drive home.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Before your appointment, you’ll take a prescription pill that puts you into a drowsy state. Oral conscious sedation doesn’t knock you out, but some patients become so relaxed that they fall asleep. If you’re asleep when we finish your procedure, we’ll gently wake you up. Because it takes longer for the pill’s effects to wear off, you’ll need a ride home.

IV Sedation

With IV sedation, we control how much sedation you get via an IV in your arm. You’ll still be awake and responsive, but you’ll be so relaxed that you probably won’t remember your appointment. Make sure you have a ride home!

General Anesthesia

This is the only type of sedation where you’re rendered temporarily unconscious. You won’t feel or remember anything during your appointment. Dr. Barbin is affiliated with Cornerstone Regional Hospital, so we can safely perform dental treatments with general anesthesia there.
