Summer Break Oral Care Tips

May 24, 2022 2:09 am

This is a busy time of year with the end of school, recitals, and holiday gatherings. Fortunately, summertime is just around the bend! Summer is a great time to relax and unwind before the next school year starts. But it’s important that your child doesn’t take a vacation from good oral health habits this summer! Here’s how you can help your child maintain great oral health over their summer break:

Hydration Is Key

Make sure your child stays hydrated, particularly if they engage in a lot of physical activity on hot days, whether it’s swimming or riding bikes in the neighborhood. Drinking plenty of water will keep their body, teeth, and gums healthy. Dehydration causes brain fog, fatigue, and decreased saliva production, which can throw off the mouth’s pH balance and results in dry mouth. Mouth dryness is uncomfortable and will increase your child’s risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Get a Good Dose of Vitamin D

Spending time out in the sun helps kids and adults absorb much-needed vitamin D. Vitamin D helps strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and promote strong teeth and gums. Sufficient sunshine is beneficial for your child’s overall and oral health, so encourage them to have screen-free time playing outside. Your child should also wear proper sun protection, like sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, to protect their skin and eyes.

Daily Oral Hygiene

Make sure your child brushes their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush, brushes their tongue every day, and flosses daily.

Schedule a Dental Checkup

We recommend children and adults visit us every six months. Is it difficult to fit dental appointments into your family’s busy schedule during the school year? Then summer may be the perfect time for one of your child’s routine dental cleanings and exams!
