Does My Child Need a Fluoride Treatment?

August 31, 2021 5:09 pm

Fluoride is a mineral. It is found in certain foods (such as spinach, grapes and raisins, and potatoes) and some natural water sources. In many cities and towns, it is added to the community water system. Many types of toothpastes and mouthwashes also contain fluoride. Another source of fluoride is a fluoride treatment at the dentist for which a varnish containing fluoride is applied to the teeth.

How Does Fluoride Benefit Teeth?

Through a process called remineralization, fluoride is absorbed into the crystalline mineral structure of tooth enamel, the outer layer of teeth. This fortifies teeth against decay and cavities.

When a child’s developing teeth are exposed to excess fluoride, their teeth can experience cosmetic discoloration, called fluorosis. But the cumulative amount found in toothpaste, a routine fluoride treatment, and our community tap water is unlikely to cause your child to experience this rare occurrence.

Safe amounts of fluoride can help reduce your child’s risk of decay and cavities. However, if you are concerned about your child’s fluoride exposure, please consult with our team!

The Importance of Children’s Dental Care

We invite you and your family to visit Toothfairy Adult and Kids Dentist for routine professional cleanings and checkups every six months! During your child’s appointment, we’ll let you know if they have areas of weakened enamel that would benefit from a fluoride varnish and some extra attention during their oral hygiene routine. We offer fluoride treatments as part of our preventive dentistry services. These give teeth an added boost of protection against decay and cavities!

Other ways your child can reduce their risk of dental disease include: brushing twice a day for two minutes each time; flossing every day; drinking plenty of water; chewing only sugar-free gum; and consuming a balanced diet. Help your child establish excellent oral health habits now so they will be second nature as they grow into adulthood!
