How Does Fluoride Benefit Teeth?

Through a process called remineralization, fluoride is absorbed into the crystalline mineral structure of tooth enamel, the outer layer of teeth. This fortifies teeth against decay and cavities.

When a child’s developing teeth are exposed to excess fluoride, their teeth can experience cosmetic discoloration, called fluorosis. But the cumulative amount found in toothpaste, a routine fluoride treatment, and our community tap water is unlikely to cause your child to experience this rare occurrence.
